Cold & Wind Ritual
Cold & Wind Ritual
French Press
Dark, grounding, and built for the blustery days.
The PNW rainy season descends. The mountains are calling. An Alaskan winter settles in. This is the ritual for those days — a hot, dark cup of strong coffee with hints of chocolate, a cozy blanket, a roaring fireplace, and your favorite marathon series. And for the other days — the ones where you lace up anyway, chase the chill away, and head out into the inclement weather because another cup is waiting for you when you return. The Cold & Wind Ritual is steady, warm, and cozy. It’s the ritual that holds you in and sends you out.
The Practice
The French Press Method
On a blustery morning, the French press is the right call. Coarse-ground, dark, and steeped slow — it fills the room with something that smells like warmth before you’ve even taken a sip. Press it. Pour it. Wrap both hands around the mug. That’s the ritual.
“Some mornings you settle in. Some mornings you gear up and go out. Either way, the French press is where it starts.”
Dark, earthy, syrupy — the Cold & Wind blends are built for full immersion brewing. The French press pulls out every note: the chocolate, the smoke, the volcanic depth. Nothing filtered out. Nothing held back.
Brew Guide — The French Press Method
Grind: Coarse — like raw sugar
Ratio: 1:15 coffee to water (e.g. 30g coffee · 450ml water)
Water Temp: 200°F / just off the boil
Steep: 4 minutes — don’t rush it
Press: Slow and steady — 30 seconds down
Pour: Immediately — don’t let it sit and over-extract
Serve: Both hands on the mug. Nowhere to be.
Two Ways to Drink It
Settle In or Head Out
The Cold & Wind Ritual serves two kinds of mornings. Both start with the same cup.
The Cozy — Settle In
Cozy blanket. Roaring fireplace. Your favorite marathon series queued up. A hot, dark cup of French press with hints of chocolate — that happy medicine — warming both hands. The PNW rain on the windows. Nowhere to be. This is the ritual of staying in and meaning it.
The Send-Off — Get Up and Go
The other kind of Cold & Wind morning. The one where you lace up anyway. Where the cup steadies you, warms you from the inside, and gives you the pick-up needed to get out in the inclement weather — take that hike, ski that run, walk in the chilly rain. Because another cup is waiting for you when you get back.
Cold & Wind Coffees
Dark, Grounding, Far-North Warm.
Sumatra · Dark Roast
Gunner’s Bowl
Dark · Earthy · Syrupy
Sumatra at its most grounding. Gunner’s Bowl is dark, earthy, and syrupy — the kind of coffee that fills the room before you pour it. Full-bodied and low-acid, it’s built for the French press and the kind of morning where you need something that holds you steady. Notes of dark chocolate, cedar, and earth. Strong and steady coffee for the moments of extreme.
Best for: French press · Moka pot · Drip on a cold morning
“Gunner’s Bowl is a real place — a double black diamond run at Mount Baker Ski Resort in Washington. The Canyon, our famous and scenic black diamond, opens into it, and descends into Gunner’s Bowl. This run is a personal favorite of The Man of the House.”
Bali Blue · Dark Roast
Baker Blue
Bold · Volcanic · Earthy
Bali Blue grown in volcanic soil at elevation — bold, earthy, and complex. Baker Blue brings the kind of depth that only comes from high-altitude growing and dark roasting. Smooth enough to sip straight, strong enough to chase the chill away. Notes of dark cocoa, volcanic mineral, and a long, warm finish.
Best for: French press · Drip · Black or with a touch of cream on a cold morning
“Named for Mt. Baker — the glacier-capped peak that watches over the North Cascades. Cold, volcanic, and enduring. Just like the coffee.”
